Members of the Grand and Provincial Grand Officers Luncheon Club held their first meeting of 2014 at Liverpool Masonic Hall. The guest speaker on this occasion was well-known local Mason John Fegan, a past master of Stanley Lodge No 1325.
John’s chosen subject was ‘The Miracle of Flight BA09’, a subject he has spoken upon before to great effect in his own lodge. He is able to relate this account from an authoritative standpoint as he is a retired professional airline pilot. He held his audience spellbound with this thrilling story of a real life incident which occurred in 1982, on the Jakarta to Perth section of an international flight.
The courageous actions of the captain and crew, which avoided disaster, were described in detail by John. The fortitude displayed by the crew over an extended period of time was admirable. The account given by John received warm applause from the members.

Acting chairman Jim Kontzle called upon Derek Horrocks to affirm the club’s appreciation for John’s lecture. Derek congratulated John on his presentation and commented that the passengers on the British Airways flight were fortunate that the captain and crew were able to demonstrate perseverance and resolve which may not always be expected from other airlines. His comments were heartily endorsed by the applause of the members.
Luncheon Club membership is open to all grand and Provincial grand officers. The club meets on the last Thursday of the months of October, November, January, February, March, April and May, when the meeting is addressed by an invited guest who gives an entertaining talk of Masonic interest, except at the May meeting when the annual general meeting takes place.
The meetings are held at the Liverpool Masonic Hall, Hope Street. The bar is open at 11.45am. The lunch itself is set up 12.45pm, followed by the speaker’s address and usually concluded by 2.30pm.
