The presence of the Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals, Kevin Poynton with his ebullient and effervescent personality, considerably enlivened the proceedings at the recent installation ceremony of Hamer Chapter No 1393, which was held in the magnificent Egyptian room at the Liverpool Masonic Hall.
Kevin on this occasion and was escorted into the chapter by several officers of supreme grand chapter including the Liverpool Group Chairman Sam Robinson, Steve Walls and Hamer Chapter members Sid Ford and 98 years old Bernard Sheridan. Group secretary Dave Johnson was present in his capacity of acting Provincial Principal Grand Sojourner.
Hamer Chapter stalwart and 35 year veteran Chris Benn was installed into the first principal’s chair once more. He has occupied the office in four previous years, 1987, 1993, 2008 and 2009. Also advanced to the second principal’s chair was Aaron Banks who has progressed admirably through the chapter offices. Chris Benn’s long experience as leader of the chapter will be an advantage this year as he will have no less than three candidates to exalt. Chris is a St Helens resident and a retired accountant with a fondness for real ale. As a CAMRA member, Chris visits his local once a week to ensure that the high standards of brewing are maintained!
The ceremony was conducted in a most proper and dignified manner. Supervised throughout by chapter DC Malcolm Warren and conducted by immediate past first principal Gordon Herron, assisted by chapter members who read the prayers and excerpts from scripture.
On completion, Kevin Poynton rose and congratulated Chris on his installation on behalf of the Provincial Grand Superintendent. He also congratulated all those who had taken part in the ceremony and passed best wishes for the forthcoming year to all of the companions.
In response Chris presented Kevin with a cheque from the chapter members in the sum of £100, made out to the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity. Kevin thanked the companions for their generosity on behalf of those who will benefit.
The proceedings complete the companions adjourned to a lavish festive board.
